A quick-learning herding dog with a strong need for purposeful activity. Training interest and time matter more than simply having a large garden.

Medium 18.1–29.5 kg
A vigorous herding dog developed in the United States. Daily training, thoughtful social experiences and the ability to teach calm rest are central to a workable home.
Both breeds were developed for work involving livestock and close attention to their surroundings. Physical activity alone is not a complete plan. They need appropriate learning, rest and outlets for their interests; continually increasing activity is not a substitute for teaching calm.
Watch how individual dogs respond to movement, visitors and busy spaces. Herding interests can appear in a family setting, so ask specifically about behaviour around children, bicycles and other animals. The Australian Shepherd’s coat and the Border Collie’s coat varieties also create different grooming routines.
Before choosing either, identify a reward-based trainer and consider whether you enjoy training as an ongoing activity. Ask about temperament, health testing and the dogs’ working history. Colour and eye markings are poor reasons to choose a demanding companion.
