Active lifestyles

An energetic dog needs a routine, including on busy workdays and in poor weather. Physical activity works best alongside training, sniffing and opportunities to settle.

How we select these breeds

These breeds have relatively high exercise needs. Puppies, older dogs and dogs with health conditions need individual plans; do not treat a breed's energy as permission for intense exercise.

These are starting points for research. Individual dogs, their history and your care arrangements matter.

Large 31.8–59 kg

A large, powerful Akita described here using the AKC’s American-type reference. Careful social management and experienced handling matter more than a quiet outward manner.

Large 34–38.6 kg

A strong northern freight dog with a substantial coat and independent judgement. Handling strength, secure exercise and realistic dog-to-dog management deserve careful thought.

Medium 18.1–29.5 kg

A vigorous herding dog developed in the United States. Daily training, thoughtful social experiences and the ability to teach calm rest are central to a workable home.

Medium

A scent-led hound that enjoys company and exploration. Secure management and patient recall work are important when an interesting smell competes with the owner.

Large 31.8–52.2 kg

A large farm-dog companion with a heavy coat and a substantial practical footprint. Consider health, lifespan and the ability to manage an adult dog’s weight before choosing.

Small 5.4–8.2 kg

A sociable companion with a curly coat that trades loose hair for substantial grooming. Expect an involved dog, regular maintenance and patient teaching of household routines.

Medium 13.6–24.9 kg

A quick-learning herding dog with a strong need for purposeful activity. Training interest and time matter more than simply having a large garden.

Small 5.4–11.3 kg

A compact, lively companion with a short coat and a flat face. Eye protection, breathing comfort and sensible activity in warm conditions deserve daily attention.

Large 22.7–36.3 kg

An exuberant, athletic companion with a short coat and a substantial body. Calm greetings, considerate exercise and documented heart-health screening are important parts of ownership.

Small

A very small, alert companion with a definite voice. Gentle handling, confidence-building and ordinary dog training matter as much as a compact size.

Large 20.4–31.8 kg

An athletic dog with a striking spotted coat and substantial activity needs. Hearing records, urinary health and a household that enjoys daily training are important considerations.

Large 27.2–45.4 kg

An athletic, attentive working dog that needs sustained training and household involvement. Heart health and careful assessment of temperament are essential to an informed choice.

Medium 18.1–22.7 kg

A busy gundog that benefits from searching, training and regular activity. Its enthusiasm and feathered coat make an active outdoor routine a practical commitment.

Large 22.7–40.8 kg

A powerful, attentive working dog that needs purposeful training and careful social development. Heavy shedding and a strong interest in its surroundings are part of the commitment.

Giant 49.9–79.4 kg

A giant companion whose height changes ordinary household tasks. Early training, accessible transport and careful health planning matter even when the adult temperament is calm.

Large 27.2–31.8 kg

A tall, lean sighthound whose calm resting habits coexist with fast chase responses. Safe exercise and the individual’s experience with home life deserve attention.

Large 24.9–36.3 kg

An energetic, people-oriented retriever with an appetite for activity—and often food. A short coat makes grooming simpler, but does not mean little shedding.

Small 12.7–13.6 kg

A low-built herding dog with strength, opinions and a coat that sheds. Short legs do not mean low exercise needs or little interest in household activity.

Medium 15.9–29.5 kg

A sociable northern working dog with a full white coat and a frequent voice. Daily activity, brushing and thoughtful teaching of independence are recurring commitments.

Small 6.8–11.3 kg

A small herding dog with a responsive nature, an alert voice and a full coat. Training and quiet handling matter more than treating it as a miniature Collie.

Medium 15.9–27.2 kg

An endurance sled dog with a dense coat, a strong interest in movement and a distinctive voice. Secure exercise arrangements are essential before admiring the appearance.

Large 18.1–31.8 kg

An athletic, quick-learning Poodle variety with a low-shedding coat that needs regular skilled care. The clipped appearance can hide a capable outdoor companion.

Small 1.8–2.7 kg

A small Poodle variety with an active mind and a demanding coat. Its size makes gentle handling important, but does not remove the need for walks and training.

Medium 11.3–18.1 kg

A lightly built sighthound that can enjoy fast running and quiet rest. Secure exercise, warmth and caution around chase opportunities are important practical needs.

Small 3.2–3.2 kg

A small terrier with considerable interest in the world. Its fine coat and tiny frame need care, while everyday walks and training remain part of normal dog life.
